    Chronochromatic Variations II (2024)
    for piano quartet

Commissioned and premiered by Freesound Ensemble Toronto

Chronochromatic Variations is a cycle for piano and string instruments in various combinations: I. for piano solo (15 min), II. for piano quartet (25 min) and III. for string trio (45 min). They are all based on sampled material from various sources from the Western classical-romantic repertoire that is cut up and re-composed. As “chrono-chroma” in the title suggests, these pieces aim to establish a space of listening where small differences in the duration of musical phrases, gestures or melodic fragments can be perceived in the same way as pitches on a chromatic scale, like in a chromatic “duration-sclae.” There’s not much happening in these pieces in a larger, dramaturgical sense: they’re quite static. But in this standstill they keep moving, constantly, inviting you to keep moving with them, zooming in and out.
